W32.Sasser.Worm
Discovered on: April 30, 2004

If you find your PC slowing down to a crawl you might have the W32.Sasser.Worm running amuck on your system. Check your "Processes", there should be something called avserve.exe running...

...mutters something about Windows computers...

I haven't come across this myself thankfully, but if you are a Windows user you might want to get patched up just in case:

Microsoft patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS04-011.mspx

More information:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...asser.worm.html
http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp...al_instructions

This worm isn't one you get from opening email attachments, it randomly selects IP addresses to attempt infections, the patch will in theory provide a shield against these intrusions...

While on the topic of vulnerabilities, please make sure that you have a software or hardware firewall running (if possible) when you're online. I might write a short tutorial on network security at some later stage.
